How can I convert vintage yarn in an old crochet pattern?

I want to make a pair of vintage bedroom slippers. The pattern calls for 2 oz. Zephyr Wool and a No. 8 celluloid hook. Can anyone help me decide what modern-day yarn & hook would give approximately the same gauge? (P.S. This is Myrna, not James. Tried to change the name but couldn't.)
